Street Smarts' Designs Under Construction at Newton County's Turkey Creek

New boardwalk across Turkey Lake in Newton County

The first section of the Turkey Creek/Yellow River Trail is now under construction. This segment is in Turner Lake Park and includes improving the boardwalk across Turner Lake (installing a new surface, adding handrails and constructing a new pavilion), construction of new trail sections and the repair and resurfacing of other trail sections. Future phases of the trail (currently in design) will continue the trail along the Yellow River to the Newton County High School and on to downtown Porterdale. Included in this work will be two bridges crossing the Yellow River. Street Smarts is also in final design for the Library-Eastside High School trail on the east side of Covington.

Street Smarts Mentors "Most Outstanding Engineering Intern"

L-R: Marsha Anderson Bomar, Julia Kim and Internship Coordinator Molly McAuliffe

Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology junior Julia Kim recently completed an internship with Street Smarts. During her 12-week position, she created several landscape architecture concept designs, one of which is to be constructed on the new GSMST campus at 970 McElvaney Lane, Lawrenceville, Georgia near Old Norcross Road and Riverside Parkway.

Interning with the Street Smarts Planning & Design Studio, Ms. Kim produced four designs for the "Fellowship Terrace", a pass-through courtyard where students can gather, study and eat lunch as well as attend class in the outdoor classroom. In order to utilize available resources, she is incorporating other organizations such as the Boy Scouts to build picnic tables and the Ecology Club to provide plants for the project.

Ms. Kim presented her plans in a power point presentation to an audience of Street Smarts staff in March, impressing President Marsha Anderson Bomar and mentor Jay Scott, Director of Planning. "Julia's enthusiasm, willingness to learn and overall ability to grasp new concepts made her a real joy to work with," states Jay. "I have no doubt that she will go far in any area she pursues." Earlier this year, she was awarded Most Outstanding Engineering Intern out of 48 GSMST students. She hopes the plan will be constructed before her graduation in 2011.
